While this is his first novel, Scott R. Caseley has written and directed a dramatic feature, co-wrote and directed a documentary, and writes for an online magazine. He was born in Nashua, New Hampshire and raised in the next town over Hudson. “I grew up doing things like drama club, the school newspaper briefly, with my nose in a book or my blue pen on the page,” shared Caseley. He graduated from Franklin Pierce University with a degree in Mass Communication, a minor in History and a completed feature length film. After graduating, Scott R. Caseley worked in retail, at a variety of temp jobs and financed a second film. “Over the years, I’ve become a trained stage, screen and voice actor,” stated Caseley.
In addition to his creative pursuits, Scott R. Caseley is passionate about healthy living. He follows a mostly self-directed fitness quest consisting of weight training, walking, swimming, yoga, and hula-hooping. Something a phone interview doesn’t allow us to witness, but would have been interesting to see. When not working out, Scott R. Caseley also enjoys cooking healthy gourmet meals as well as playing board games with family and friends with plenty of coffee brewing to keep the fun going until the wee hours of the morning. Caseley shared, “My whole life I have taken chances, asking the cute girl if she would like to dance to a slow song at a school dance, trying out for a team when I had no athletic ability, or a play though crippled by shyness, after college making a film for film festival contention, etc. More often than not, rejection was what I received.”
Each rejection was disappointing for Scott R. Caseley, but he never let it get him down for long. Instead, he used the example of the past rejection to remind himself that though the odds are often long, you have to keep going for the things you want. “If I’m rejected, I cannot take it personally. It’s all a part of the game of life,” stated Caseley.
Scott R. Caseley is excited about the changes in the publishing industry as his debut novel Isosceles is currently only available as an eBook. “I think it’s evolving like the film industry has been for the past twenty to thirty years. With the book industry, it used to be a success, the goal was to get in with one of the big companies to get your work available in stores worldwide just as film directors made movies under the umbrella of a big studio for theatrical distribution. E-publishing has started to become more prevalent as video had done with film, and with both eBooks and video with an electronic file, projects can be available everywhere at a cheaper price,” shared Caseley.
He is correct in self-publishing being what filmmakers with editing software and cameras were to the film world. However, both industries have just evolved to open it up for more people and the results remain to be seen as the dust settles, so to speak.
Scott R. Caseley isn’t self-published; instead, a small indie publisher out of Canada, MuseItUp Publishing, picked him up. They tend to test the waters by first offering books only as eBooks. With the e-publishing, we are able to discover new authors such as Scott R. Caseley who not only understand how to tell a good story but leave the reader guessing throughout his novel. If the testing of waters is successful, then publishers such as MuseItUp will invest to print the book.
Scott R. Caseley was honest about his novel not always turning out the way he wanted at first;
“During a chapter where two characters reach a turning point in their lives, it lacked something, but I didn’t know what. After thinking on it a while, I decided t it needed some extra action to build up to the turning point. I planned on going for a drive to think it out, but then it started snowing and my car was not the best in inclement weather so I stayed home. Instead, I stared at the blank Microsoft Word screen and talked online with one of my friends. Before long, the wind howled, the snow fell with great ferocity, the plows drove by in full force and the idea came to me, the characters needed to go sledding.”
After many revisions, long hours and editing, Scott R. Caseley has produced a publishable manuscript and a story this writer has enjoyed reading. I’ll be sharing my review later here on Blogcritics, but for now, here is a snippet about the book.
Isosceles takes the reader on a journey through the thirteen-year friendship between Sean McIntyre and Trey Goodsby and up to the tragic end of Trey’s life, then goes into what effect his death has on Sean and those closest to the two boys.
